The Prime Minister's remarkably clear reorientation on the Britain's following Brexit connections to the European Union on Saturday was designed to communicate to the business community, to Brussels, and to fellow EU nations, as well as his political supporters.

A New Framework for Relations

The strategy noted that the US would "cultivate resistance" to continental trends and commended the "growing influence" of nationalist groups.

Among officials, there is an acknowledgement that the rapidly changing world has changed again.

Home Pressures

At home, the leadership also foresees being pressured on Brexit not just one political rival, but also another, which is campaigning in its stronghold regions in May's elections.

The Prime Minister's latest comments are the product of a confluence of commercial realities, electoral strategy and global dynamics as the UK starts a year that will mark the 10th anniversary of the decision to leave the European Union.
