We are analyzing images and video shared earlier today that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that authorities in Russia state killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to check the location of where the pictures originated relied on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to match the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional structures, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
