Consider this a dare for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.
A Debut Feature Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for ten years. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The narrative commences when the couple transition from the metropolis to the country for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the cliches conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Complex Characterizations
A significant portion of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.
The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the metaphor avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
