Cameron Norrie achieved the most important success of his professional journey by rebounding from a early deficit to overcome top-ranked player Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Although he had before defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory marks Norrie's first ever success over a reigning world No 1.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who is now the latest UK male player in history to beat a global number one. "Bouncing back from health issues last year, I was defeated in the first round of qualifiers here. I just sought to appreciate my tennis in the closing months of the year. To achieve a victory like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my initial victory over the top player and arguably the most in-form competitor in the sport right now."

The British player, ranked 31st in the world, also stopped Alcaraz's dominant streak of nine consecutive finals and 17 straight premier event victories, which was the best series of results in the Spanish star's developing career.

Game Breakdown

Alcaraz seemed to be advancing smoothly to success at the start as he eased past the opening set. Yet, Norrie gradually fought his way into contention by delivering with greater precision and dragging the Spanish opponent into lengthy, physical rallies. His unceasing shot tolerance and dependability steadily took its toll.

For much of the battle, the world number one performed well on serve but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm off his groundstrokes. The 22-year-old seemed notably uneasy striking his forehand, which has been the top weapon in the game for much of this season, producing 29 mistakes off the forehand side and a combined of 54 mistakes. On the other side, the British player gave Alcaraz so few mistakes, maintaining his reliability, fitness and power throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to advance into the court and play aggressively.

In the tense closing stages, the British competitor brilliantly held his nerve to defeat the world's finest in the sport.

Professional Context

After battling for a long time due to a major physical setback and struggles with his performance, the tennis professional dropped as far down as 91st globally this season. After making the last eight at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam round of 16 after that, this victory highlights the experienced player's improvement as he aims to come back to the world's top twenty and even higher. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his remarkable achievements, is has not yet figure out how to display his best tennis in indoor conditions.
