A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
