Lifetime of Earnings Inadequate for UK Workers to Become Part of Richest 10%, Analysis Says

Per fresh research, the typical employee in the UK would require over five decades of earnings to achieve the wealth level of the richest 10% of the population.

Growing Wealth Gap Across Decades

The study examined wealth distribution statistics covering the Covid pandemic period and discovered that during the pre-financial crisis era, it would have required 38 years' worth of average worker salary to enter the richest segment of the wealth distribution.

An economic expert associated with the study commented: "Wealth gaps in Britain are now so large that a average worker accumulating their complete salary throughout their career would still not be able to achieve the peak of the financial hierarchy."

Quantifying the Financial Disparity

The analysis found that the disparity between the net worth of the typical individual and an individual in the wealthiest decile was £1 million in the mid-2000s, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in real terms by recent times.

The analyst continued: "These disparities are especially alarming as economic movement in Britain is limited – people that start life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Although the financial disparity growing in actual numbers, the percentage of overall assets in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," as stated in the analysis.

During this period, overall assets in the UK increased dramatically from triple the annual GDP, to almost 7.5 times.

Factors of Economic Disparity

So-called "unearned" appreciation, through rising house prices and adjustments to retirement fund assessments, were the main drivers of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, according to the report.

These increases tended to accrue to older, property-owning households, the research shows – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Generational Financial Divides

The average wealth gap between people in their early 30s and people aged 60-64 increased over twofold in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in 2006-08, to 310 thousand pounds.

Geographic Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed pronounced area-based disparities, with the average level of net worth in recent years reaching 290 thousand pounds in south-east England, where real estate values have generally grown substantially, as opposed to £110,000 in the NE of England.

COVID Era Impact

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and pandemic lockdowns limited opportunities for spending, the data shows numerous families were in a position to set aside money, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The median home in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds rise by merely £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the two years pre-pandemic. Conversely, the typical family in the wealthiest fifth saw their liquid savings rise by £4,200," the analysis concludes.
