A clergy member and guardian team from a Northern English city temple have been commended as "heroes" by the National Leader for their conduct when the building came under threat.

Two individuals from the Jewish community lost their lives and several more were left in serious condition during the violent incident that occurred during worship services marking the Day of Atonement at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation.

The police commissioner confirmed that attendees and protective personnel helped prevent the assailant from entering the structure before he was fatally wounded.

The National Leader stated there was clear certainty that first responders and the synagogue's security team "stopped an even greater disaster".

The attacker was wearing a questionable detonator, which police have stated was non-functional, when he steered a automobile at crowds before attacking several people.

A witness at the scene said worship ceremonies had begun when the attack transpired but Rabbi Daniel Walker, who was conducting the ceremony, remained composed and he and others guided the worshippers to security.

The witness stated: "They are true heroes."

The top cop said there were many attendees inside the temple at the time of the attack.

He applauded security staff and congregation members who barred the attacker out, declaring that thanks to the "immediate valor of protective personnel and the congregation members inside, as well as the fast reaction of the officers, the perpetrator was thwarted from gaining access".

Local Reaction

The regional mayor announced: "Currently, our primary concerns are with the families of those people who died, those hurt and those distressed by this, a terrible religious-based violence. We denounce it entirely."

A serious situation was announced at approximately morning time after officers received a report from a male individual who said he had seen a automobile being steered toward members of the public and a male security guard had been stabbed.

Two suspects have been taken into custody in relation to the attack.

Witness Accounts

A academic professional who was present in the worship center said congregation members proceeded with their ceremony after being removed.

He said the congregation were moved by officers first into the secondary space of the facility, then to a nearby center, stating he did not fear for his security.

The suspect was shot dead within brief period of the first report to police.

A delivery driver, who observed the attack said he observed a person outside the temple carrying a knife.

He said: "Within seconds, the police arrived, they provided him a few cautions, he ignored them so they shot."

The suspect then "began to rise" and they [the police] "shot him again", the witness said - describing it as "stressful" to witness.

Another observer, who dwells adjacent to the worship center, said when the individual got out of the automobile he "commenced assaulting people in proximity" after the automobile crashed into the temple entrance.

After the violent episode, law enforcement said a audible blast could be heard as "expert teams accessed the individual's car as a protective step".

Government Reaction

The Government Leader declared: "This nation is also a land where Hebrew structures, synagogues, even learning centers require round the clock protection, where targeted safety protocols is essential because of the ongoing risk of religious prejudice."
