From Disappointing to Defective – Is There Any Team Truly Desiring to Secure the NFL Championship This Season?
No major competition markets parity like the NFL: it’s the entire brand. However, after 10 weeks of this season, this isn’t a league that is equally balanced separating contenders, pretenders, and middle-of-the-pack clubs. Instead, it's a scenario where most of the league are merely sufficient.
NFC Clarity
Looking at the NFC side, to some degree, there is some clarity. Los Angeles and Seattle (both at 7-2) appear to be the most complete teams across the league, and secured decisive victories on Sunday. The 6-2 Eagles notwithstanding their difficulties maintain a deeply skilled squad across the NFL, likewise with the Packers franchise (5-2-1). Detroit as well (6-3 standing), who have been inconsistent on offense and defense and have been dealing with coaching drama, have proven they're capable of dominating quality opponents. For each of these squads, you can still easily envision a Super Bowl path.
AFC Confusion
Turning to the American Football Conference, championship race remains completely chaotic. Your four division leaders through ten weeks: Indianapolis, New England, Denver (each with 8-2 records) and the Steelers (5-4 record). Consider that carefully. Not the Chiefs. No Bills inclusion. Neither Ravens nor Bengals. The usual contenders, backed by the league’s best quarterbacks, have either significant personnel gaps or have suffered medical setbacks.
Parity Mechanics
To some extent, this is exactly what the league wants. However, witnessing this season's top AFC teams in the AFC continues to seem unusual. Components of every squad meet championship standards, yet not completely. If someone requested to lock in your AFC title game selections at this moment, could you assuredly choose any among the current division frontrunners?
Squad Examinations
Indianapolis Outlook
Starting in Indianapolis, their quarterback hasn't descended to complete disaster level. However, recent performances have raised concerns. He's reverting to turning over the ball and failing against blitzes. He suffered seven sacks versus Atlanta in the weekend game, and had a brief period where he delivered an interception and lost three fumbles. This follows he committed turnovers five times versus Pittsburgh.
The Colts’ offense excelled during early games since Jones evaded game-changing errors. Jonathan Taylor and the offensive line make the Colts able to withstand periodic mistakes, as demonstrated overseas. However, if Jones reverts to his historically mistake-heavy play would end championship hopes.
New England Patriots
New England appears fairly alike. Last season, they were considered jokes. Now, they’re the NFL's most pleasant shock and the hottest team across the league following seven consecutive victories. If not for fumbling away a winnable game facing Pittsburgh, they'd possess a 9-1 record with the top standing. Last season, they were old and slow. Currently they're inexperienced, speedy and bold. However, we must acknowledge the weakness of New England's opponents. They have faced the most manageable schedule in the league, yet vulnerabilities remain. The signal-caller has taken sacks on 35 occasions – ranking second league-wide – and some of the shots he endured during the game were vicious. As the season progresses, those beatings accumulate.
Broncos Situation
Denver stands at eight wins similarly, and the perception remains like they're nervously waiting. Bo Nix has shown inconsistency, and the offensive unit laboring, while the defensive unit provides the majority of the work. Without serviceable quarterback play, the Broncos aren’t scaring any playoff team. Los Angeles remains nearby within their division at 7-2, yet medical problems affecting their protection unit will present challenges for extended playoff success.
Pittsburgh Situation
Meanwhile, Pittsburgh exists, somehow still leading their division even after suffering 25-10 by the Chargers in the evening game. Their scoring margin remains negative, their defensive unit frequently falters, and the QB's current constraints given his veteran status continue to show up. At 5-4, they're barely clinging, but Baltimore, featuring a recovered Jackson and the schedule softening, are riding a three-game streak. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise that the Ravens have pulled within a game of the Steelers, but how rapidly this occurred is an indictment of Pittsburgh's fluctuating form. Considering the Ravens opened losing five of six and still look like they should win the division speaks volumes regarding the complete conference.
Traditional Powers
The Ravens represent a segment among three elite teams – together with Bills and Chiefs – fueled by former MVP signal-callers, that would continue to generate the most fear in opposing teams should they reach postseason. They represent undesirable playoff matchups, however, both franchises persistently undermine themselves.
Buffalo Analysis
Previously, Buffalo was celebrating after beating the Chiefs. On Sunday they suffered a particularly discouraging setback of the season. They didn't simply fail versus the Dolphins; they looked terrible, falling 30-13 on the road. It was Miami’s first win against Buffalo in several seasons.
