Finest Small Screen Choices: Seven Essential Films This Week

Highlighted Choice

The Substance Film

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire examines the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics and the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a brilliant performance in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity demoted to hosting a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside thanks to her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to an enigmatic and gruesome procedure known as the Substance. This generates a new version of herself called Sue, leading to an increasingly vampiric relationship between the two. October 17th, Paramount Plus

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque mystery features the talented actress as Laura, a skilled journalist who decides to take a hiatus from writing about international wars to join a luxury cruise with a gravely sick wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her husband, as well as other affluent guests. But after an unknown lady falls into the sea during the evening and all passengers claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity awaken. Streaming currently, on Netflix

Presence

The acclaimed director pushes his film-making abilities through this innovative supernatural story shot entirely from the viewpoint of the spirit. As a family featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the filming device – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The daughter appears aware of the poltergeist, and it seems guarding her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that could catch you off guard. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere

This Self-Referential Film

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this self-referential adventure. He portrays a self-obsessed celebrity playing himself who takes on a $1m payday to visit a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by the CIA to investigate the suspected cartel boss, Cage's unique performing skills is put to the test. Saturday 11 October, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

The director's contained scarefest stands strong even without a sequel. Located in 1970s Colorado, a series of kidnappings has made the children on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads the worst. But the disconnected phone in the room keeps ringing, with spooky callers giving advice, while the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, late evening, Film4

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for greed in this director's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, asserting religious justification for riches. He and Tammy Faye begin profiting from the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, yet Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure with compassion. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

The current week's another release from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars used by Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a traitor inside the organization from a group of five – one of whom is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Each performer excel of calm composure, so a delicious mind game of truth or lie unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, various showings, the Sky channel
